Troubleshooting PDF Upload Issues and Chat Thread Errors
Last updated: April 7, 2026
If you're experiencing issues with PDF uploads or chat threads becoming unresponsive, here are the most common causes and solutions.
Common PDF Upload Issues
File Size Limits
PDFs must be under 10MB to upload successfully. If your file is larger, compress it before uploading.
Filename Requirements
PDF filenames can only contain:
Alphanumeric characters
Whitespace characters (but not consecutive spaces)
Hyphens
Parentheses
Square brackets
If your filename contains special characters like underscores, symbols, or consecutive spaces, rename the file before uploading.
When Chat Threads Stop Working
If you encounter error messages like "An error occurred" or your chat thread becomes blank or unresponsive, this is typically caused by:
Long Thread Length
Very long chat threads can sometimes cause processing issues. If you've been working in the same thread for an extended period, the system may have trouble handling the accumulated conversation history.
Invalid File Uploads
Uploading files with invalid filenames or certain file characteristics can cause the entire thread to become inaccessible.
Solutions
Start a New Thread
The most reliable solution is to start a new chat thread. This resolves most issues related to:
Thread length limits
File upload errors
Processing timeouts
For Output Token Limits
If you encounter output token limits during responses:
Break up your tasks into smaller, more specific steps
Type "continue" to have the system pick up where it left off
Best Practices
Periodically start new threads for long conversations
Ensure PDF filenames follow the naming requirements
Keep individual PDFs under 10MB
If a thread becomes unresponsive, try refreshing first, then start a new thread
